Alejandro Garnacho hit back at a fan who mocked his start to the new Premier League season following Manchester United’s heavy defeat to Liverpool.

Garnacho, 20, enjoyed an impressive 2023-24 season at Old Trafford, firmly establishing himself in the starting XI with his goal of the season against Everton and scoring in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

The winger was part of the Argentina squad that won this summer’s Copa America, returning to training at Carrington in August after his summer break.

With little pre-season under his belt, Garnacho has been eased back into the side after a busy summer, starting on the bench in the opening Premier League games of the season against Fulham and Brighton.

The Argentine was brought into the starting XI on Sunday against Liverpool but struggled to make an impact in what was a dismal team showing from United, thrashed 3-0 by their arch-rivals on home turf.

After the match, a video entitled ‘Alejandro Garnacho, season so far’, emerged on X mocking the winger.

The heavily-edited two-minute and 17 second clip shows instances of the United star misplacing passes and failing to beat his opponent across his side’s first three games of the season, omitting his assist against Fulham and his goal off the bench against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Garnacho responded to the clip in a now-deleted tweet, writing: ‘Wasting your time making clips for me – your life so far’ alongside the laughing emoji.

Garnacho later deleted the tweet.

Garnacho was replaced after 69 minutes on Sunday with Amad Diallo coming onto replace him – a decision that drew boos from some sections of the support with Marcus Rashford remaining on the pitch.

Erik ten Hag defended that decision after the match, insisting Garnacho was still not ready to play a full 90 minutes.

‘It was the first start for [Joshua] Zirkzee and for Garnacho. Then you decide to bring players on who can have an impact,’ Ten Hag told the BBC.

‘[Amad] Diallo, he deserved it [to come on]. he can have an impact. We then brought a player off who is not used to 90 minutes.’
