Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana felt new signing Leny Yoro showed off the quality he possesses in the friendly win over Rangers on Saturday in Edinburgh.
The 18-year-old made a £52m move from Lille earlier this week and was straight into the starting line-up as the Red Devils took on the Scottish giants in a pre-season friendly.
The Frenchman partnered Jonny Evans at centre-back in a Manchester United team that featured the likes of Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount and Aaron Wan-Bissaka and a number of youth team products.
Onana was clearly impressed with what he saw from Yoro, saying that the new arrival showed he has the quality needed to be a Manchester United player in the 2-0 win.
‘That’s why he’s here [he has lots of talent],’ Onana said of Yoro. ‘If you want to be a Manchester United player, you must have quality and he’s already shown himself in the first half. He’s a young player, a talented player, good on the ball, so we’re going to enjoy him this season.
‘He will [have the temperament], he will, and we’re here to help him. We’re going to give him time, we know he’s going to be alright and we have very good scouts here, so if they made him come, that means he’s got a lot of quality.’
There has been significant change at Manchester United over the summer so far, not just in the playing squad but also in Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff.
Club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has returned as assistant manager, with Rene Hake also appointed in the same role, while Jelle ten Rouwelaar has arrived as goalkeeping coach.
On the new arrivals, Onana said: ‘I think it’s very positive for the whole club, it’s about all of us because we win and lose together. The club decided to make a lot of changes, so as a player, we just have to follow the decision.
‘I think this process has to start at the start. We’re going to fight for everything, of course, we know all what happened last season, but it’s in past and we have everything in our hands.
‘We’re going to America next week to prepare for the Premier League. It’s a tough league, the best league in the world, so we’ll be ready for the new season. Last season, I don’t want to talk about it [laughs], so this season, it’s going to be nice.’
The Red Devils’ busy pre-season continues with a tour of America, starting with a game against Arsenal on Sunday 28 July in Inglewood, California.
