Former Manchester United star apologises after ‘losing his mind’ with fan

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has apologised after a fiery clash with Boca Juniors fans after defeat to River Plate on Saturday.

The heated derby was won 1-0 by River thanks to a goal from former West Ham star Manuel Lanzini.

The game was held at Boca’s iconic la Bombonera and the home fans were not happy after the final whistle.

One supporter in particular vented his frustrations with Romero, who did not take the abuse lightly.

The 37-year-old exchanged words with a fan, leaning over the barrier into the stands, and had to be pulled away by security staff and then by substitute goalkeeper Leandro Brey.

Some fans continued to scream at the Argentina international, while there were physical clashes between some supporters.

Romero spoke out on the incident, apologising for his role in the ugly scenes.

‘When the fan insulted me, I couldn’t think at the moment and I lost my mind,’ Romero said.

‘He cursed me so hard that he just found me. I was leaving and I lost my mind and I went back to look for him.

‘I offer my apologies to the fan who insulted me because it is his right.’

Romero was not the only Manchester United connection in the Boca Juniors side, with Edinson Cavani and Marcos Rojo also in the starting XI.

It is not a happy campaign for the team so far, with defeat on Saturday leaving Boca 11th in the Argentinian top flight.
