Luke Shaw is going to miss at least the first three Manchester United games of the new Premier League season after picking up an injury in pre-season.

The 29-year-old has suffered a calf problem in training over the summer and is due to miss the season opener against Fulham on Friday night and clashes with Brighton and Liverpool.

The Red Devils hope to have the full-back in action after the international break, which could see him return against his former club Southampton on 14 September.

A brief statement from Manchester United read: ‘Luke Shaw will miss the opening games of the Premier League season due to a calf injury sustained at the start of pre-season training.

‘He is working hard on his rehabilitation with a view to being available after the first international break.’

It is more bad news for the left-back, who hasn’t played for the Red Devils since February in a Premier League clash with Luton Town.

He missed the rest of last season after that contest with a hamstring problem but returned for England at Euro 2024.

Shaw featured in the last three games of England’s campaign in Germany and started the final, which ultimately ended in heartache and a 2-1 defeat to Spain.

Manchester United hoped that he would continue his return to full fitness back at his club but has picked up a new injury ahead of the new season.
