Manchester United may not have lifted the Community Shield, but their goal-scorer, Alejandro Garnacho thoroughly impressed club legend Roy Keane.

The Argentina international opened the scoring at Wembley against Manchester City, coming off the bench and producing a fabulous goal with eight minutes to play.

His effort was cancelled out by Bernardo Silva late on and the Premier League champions went on to win in a dramatic penalty shootout.

It was disappointment for the Red Devils but there were encouraging signs for them over the contest, not least from Garnacho.

The 20-year-old had already brilliantly played Marcus Rashford in on goal, before the Englishman fluffed his line, while Garnacho went on to calmly score his penalty in the shootout.

It was more good stuff from the winger after an impressive season last time around and Keane – not always forthcoming with great praise – says the young talent is looking like a ‘really, really good player’ now.

‘I tell you what all the really good players do,’ Keane said on ITV. ‘The really, really good players impact the game and every time he’s on the football pitch he has an impact, he does something.

‘He cuts in, lovely little finish. When he comes onto the pitch I kind of expect this from him now.

‘You knew he was going to create something. You knew he was going to have an effect. If you’re a defender you do not want to mark him because he will run at you, he will try something, he will create problems.’

While Garnacho impressed there was frustration for Rashford, who missed the glorious opportunity that the Argentinian presented for him, and another good chance in the first half.

‘We’ve seen Marcus score some great goals, but he’s got to become the scorer of those chances, be clinical,’ Keane said of the wayward striker.

‘You’ve got to hit the target, you’ve got to make the goalkeeper save it.’
