Roy Keane has identified a ‘problem’ for Manchester United after they lost the 2024 Community Shield on penalties to their rivals Manchester City.

The Red Devils beat Pep Guardiola’s men in the FA Cup final last season to qualify for the Community Shield and locked horns with City once again on Saturday.

United thought they’d won it with Alejandro Garnacho’s late goal, only for City to equalise at the death and then come out on top after a tense penalty shootout.

Legendary former United midfielder Keane, covering the showdown as a pundit, shared his thoughts on his old club after the match in his analysis for ITV.

‘Manchester United’s squad is pretty strong but the problem is they pick up a lot of injuries,’ Keane said.

‘If they keep most players fit then I’d be pretty upbeat for the start of the season. If you were Erik ten Hag, you’d be upbeat, on the evidence of that.

‘Just not strong enough in the end, and they’ll need a bit more steel to avoid conceding late goals like the one they did today.’

United had a number of key players who missed the match via injury including Rasmus Hojlund, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Leny Yoro.

City, meanwhile, were absolutely delighted to walk away with the first piece of silverware of the 2024-25 campaign.

Oscar Bobb, who massively impressed for City, told ITV: ‘Great feeling, first time we have won it in three, four years and to do it with a young group is great.

‘We had belief all the way through, we kept going, didn’t get too downbeat.

‘It’s another trophy, it’s a great start. Gives us a lot of confidence and no negatives.’

Quizzed on if we would be seeing more of him this season, Bobb added: ‘Hopefully!’
